The outstanding reputation of the Cancer Center at Ohio Valley Medical Center transcended from excellent to great with the announcement of the affiliation with The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.
We will be associated with the world-acclaimed James Cancer Center at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center allowing OVMC/EORH to provide the citizens of the Ohio Valley with the best cancer care available in the world today.
As a result, OVMC is dedicated to making all the financial commitments necessary to provide all the equipment required to fight cancer in the world arena.
The first priority is raising $3 million to purchase a linear accelerator, which is the device most commonly used for external beam radiation treatment for patients with cancer. The linear accelerator is used to treat all parts/organs of the body delivering high-energy x-rays to the region of the patient’s tumor. These ultramodern x-ray treatments are designed in such a way that they destroy the cancer cells while sparing the surrounding normal tissue.
The patient’s radiation oncologist prescribes the appropriate treatment volume and dosage. The medical radiation physicist and dosimetrist determine how to deliver the prescribed dose and calculate the amount of time it will take the accelerator to deliver that dose.
This technique in the fight against cancer administered by world-class healthcare professionals is yet another example of the benefits which will be available as a result of the affiliation with James Cancer Center at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. Raising the funds for the Linear Accelerator is just the beginning of the medical advancements on the horizon at OVMC/EORH.
Dr. Phuong Nguyen, a graduate of the prestigious Stanford School of Medicine, has joined OVMC’s team after completing her residency in radiation oncology at The Ohio State University School of Medicine.
